Shake Shack reported higher first-quarter revenue but swung to a loss as the restaurant chain made investments in marketing and technology and faced higher beef costs.

The company posted a loss of $290,000 or 1 cent a share, compared with a profit of $4.25 million, or 10 cents a share, the year prior.

Adjusted earnings were 0 cents a share. Analysts polled by FactSet expected 12 cents a share.

Revenue rose 14% to $366.7 million. Wall Street expected $372.4 million.

Same-store sales grew 4.6% compared with analysts' expectations of 4.7%.

General and administrative expenses rose to $54 million from $41 million in the year-ago quarter, reflecting investments in marketing, technology and employees.

Beef costs rose by a low-teens percentage while unfavorable weather also cut into profit. Despite this, the company's underlying sales and traffic momentum remained strong, Chief Executive Officer Rob Lynch said.
