Oshkosh Posts Lower Profit on Weakness in Largest Business Unit

Oshkosh said profit fell in the first quarter as its largest business unit came under some pressure, posting lower sales volumes.

The maker of specialty vehicles and machinery for various industries, including defense and transportation, on Friday posted a profit of $43.1 million, or 68 cents a share, compared with $112.2 million, or $1.72 a share, a year earlier.

Stripping out certain one-time items, earnings were 85 cents a share. Analysts polled by FactSet expected adjusted earnings of $1.04 a share.

Net sales ticked 0.2% higher, to $2.32 billion, and topped Wall Street models for $2.29 billion.

Chief Executive John Pfeifer attributed the decline in earnings in part to lower results across Oshkosh's access business, which houses brands such as Jerr-Dan--making towing and recovery equipment--and JLG, which makes aerial-work platforms and telehandlers.

Sales across Oshkosh's access segment fell 1.4%, to $943.4 million, on lower volumes.

Despite some weakness in its access unit, Pfeifer said demand across end markets remains generally solid: "We have good visibility for the remainder of the year," he added.

Oshkosh maintained its full-year outlook for earnings of around $10.90 a share, or around $11.50 a share on an adjusted basis. Sales are projected to come in at approximately $11 billion.

Analysts are looking for earnings of $10.76 a share, adjusted earnings of $11.16 a share, and sales of $10.9 billion.
