Cineplex narrowed its first-quarter loss as a stronger slate of international films, combined with robust turnout for Project Hail Mary and Hoppers, drove box-office revenue higher.

The Canadian movie-theater chain posted on Monday a narrowed net loss of 22.4 million Canadian dollars ($16.4 million), or C$0.36 a share, compared with a greater loss of C$36.6 million, or C$0.58 a share, in the comparable quarter a year earlier.

Adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization came to C$44.7 million, up from C$29.9 million last year.

Revenue rose 16% to C$291 million, but shy of analyst forecasts of a rise to C$294.2 million, according to FactSet.

Cineplex said it benefited from a 25% rise in box-office revenue in the quarter, boosted by the popularity of movies such as Project Hail Mary and Hoppers. International films were also a larger part of the overall showings on the big screens, and comprised 13% of total box-office revenue during the quarter.

So far in the new quarter, box-office revenue in April was 17% higher, Cineplex said.
