Analysts See Hasbro Purchase of Mattel as Unlikely -- Market Talk

Dow Jones
05/09

1456 ET - Jefferies analysts see little chance that Hasbro would be interested in purchasing Mattel outright, citing operational complexity and kid-centric intellectual property. The analysts' note comes after an activist investor, Southeastern Asset Management, called on Mattel to sell to a private equity firm, competing toy company or large media company. Southeastern said a competitor would be the most logical buyer for Mattel, and argued a deal with Hasbro looks possible given its done a better job executing on digital growth than Mattel, and there could be material synergies between the two players. The analysts say they see certain of Mattel's brands as better suited for out‑licensing or partnership models, rather than an outright divestiture, which would allow the company to retain its long‑term IP value while improving capital efficiency.
