Market Chatter: Equinix Cape Town Data Center Plan Faces Opposition Over Water, Power Concerns

Equinix's (EQIX) plan to build two data centers in Cape Town, South Africa, is facing opposition from community groups and UK non-profit Foxglove, claiming the project lacks key details on water use, electricity demand and environmental impact, Reuters reported Monday, citing a formal objection filed with city planners.

The proposed facilities could use up to 160 megawatts of power, the report said, citing the document.

Critics also raised concerns about diesel backup generators, pollution and noise, especially given Cape Town's past water shortages during the 2017-2018 "Day Zero" drought crisis, according to Reuters.

Equinix did not immediately respond to MT Newswires request for comment.
