SK Chemicals Secures European Recyclability Approval for rPET -- OPIS

South Korea's SK Chemicals has received recyclability approvals from European recycling assessment body RecyClass for seven polyester and polyethylene terephthalate resin product grades, according to a news release by the company on Thursday.

The approvals were granted under the RecyClass Technology Approval, which assesses whether plastic materials can be processed within existing PET recycling streams without negatively affecting recycling operations or recycled material quality.

Five products in the company's Ecotria Claro copolyester range -- Ecotria Claro 100, 200, 300, 100 CR50N and 200 CR50N -- received "Full Compatible" ratings, indicating the materials can be recycled together with PET bottles without additional process restrictions.

Meanwhile, Skypet BR and Skypet BR-V, two products in the company's Skypet PET resin line, received "Limited Compatible" ratings, meaning the materials remain recyclable under specified processing conditions.

These approvals validate the recyclability of the company's broader polyester portfolio, including both virgin and recycled-content materials, as European markets place increasing emphasis on circularity and design-for-recycling standards.

Recyclability is becoming as important as recycled content in evaluating sustainability performance, noting that materials with high recycled content may still face landfill risks if they cannot be effectively recycled after use.

The approvals follow earlier recognition received last year for PET bottles with the company's chemically recycled PET resin SkyPet CR, which obtained RecyClass's highest Class A compatibility rating.

RecyClass is a European non-profit industry consortium dedicated to building a circular plastics economy. It certifies and verifies plastic recyclability by utilizing standardized design guidelines and recycling assessment protocols.
