Royal Bank 2Q Helped by Loan Growth, Credit Performance -- Market Talk

0753 ET - Royal Bank logged what at first blush appears solid loan growth and improved credit performance in the latest quarter, Raymond James' Stephen Boland says. Adjusted EPS of C$3.90 was ahead of the C$3.83 he forecast. The analyst notes Royal Bank's credit-loss provision on impaired loans ratio fell 6 basis points quarter-on-quarter to 34 basis points, while the total provision for credit losses on loans ratio was 35 points. The quarter was also supported by strong non-interest income and loan growth, with U.S. wholesale loans showing strong momentum, Boland says. (robb.stewart@wsj.com)

1108 ET - Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce managed a solid 2Q that was among the best of its peer group, albeit one not as strong as the prior quarter, TD Cowen's Mario Mendonca says. CIBC's adjusted EPS of C$2.54 was up 24% on-year and ahead of the C$2.46 Mendonca expected, driven by stronger capital markets revenue. Net interest margin also was better than anticipated, and CIBC's strong capital position is supporting more share buybacks by the bank, the analyst adds. Loan growth is showing better momentum in commercial, but not personal banking, he adds. CIBC's shares are down 4.4% at C$152.51. (robb.stewart@wsj.com)
