2339 GMT - The Ebola outbreak in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo is unlikely to have a major impact on copper and cobalt mining operations, according to BMI, a unit of Fitch Solutions. Operations are located in the south and have successfully weathered previous disease outbreaks, most recently Covid-19, BMI says. "That said, downside risks should not be ignored," it says. "Ebola is significantly more deadly than Covid-19 and would have more severe consequences were transmission to intensify." For now, impacts are most likely to be felt by artisanal miners of gold, tin and coltan, an ore containing tantalum. It expects major miners will be able to withstand the outbreak, highlighting Barrick and AngloGold's jointly owned Kibali gold mine in Haut-Uele province, and Alphamin's Bisie tin mine in North Kivu province.
