MW Anthropic nears $1 trillion valuation, leapfrogging OpenAI

By Christine Ji

A $65 billion Series H funding round follows a sharp three-month revenue surge for the Claude creator, pushing Anthropic to a fresh $965 billion valuation

Anthropic's previous Series G raise valued the company at $380 billion.

Anthropic officially surpassed OpenAI to become the world's most valuable artificial-intelligence startup following a $65 billion Series H funding round announced Thursday.

The Claude creator is now worth $965 billion postfunding, surpassing OpenAI's $852 billion valuation following its latest fundraise in March. That means Anthropic is would be the 12th-most valuable company in the S&P 500 index SPX, just behind Berkshire Hathaway $(BRK.A)$ $(BRK.B)$ and above Walmart $(WMT)$.

Anthropic's latest round was led by Altimeter Capital, Dragoneer, Greenoaks and Sequoia Capital - investors who had previously participated in the company's $30 billion Series G fundraise in February of this year. The funding also included $15 billion of previously committed investments from hyperscalers, with Amazon.com (AMZN) investing $5 billion.

Anthropic has nearly tripled its valuation since February, when it was valued at $380 billion. The company shared that its run-rate revenue surpassed $47 billion earlier this month, up from $14 billion in February. Fueling this growth is a rapid surge in enterprise adoption of its Claude large language model.

"This latest funding is expected to advance our safety and interpretability research, expand compute to meet growing demand for Claude, and scale the products and partnerships our customers rely on," Anthropic said in a press release.

The company is strengthening its infrastructure partnerships to support its growth and mitigate supply-chain bottlenecks, especially for memory chips. Anthropic flagged memory-chip makers Micron $(MU)$, Samsung Electronics (KR:005930) and SK Hynix (KR:000660) as strategic infrastructure partners. "As demand for Claude continues to grow, these relationships will help us scale our compute reliably at the pace our customers need," Anthropic said.

In recent months, Anthropic has been striking opportunistic deals to expand its compute capacity. Most recently, it partnered with Elon Musk's SpaceX $(SPCX)$ to utilize graphics processing units in Colossus 1 and Colossus 2. Anthropic has committed over $100 billion to Amazon over the next 10 years, including 5 gigawatts of compute. The company has also signed deals with Google $(GOOGL)$ $(GOOG)$, Broadcom $(AVGO)$ and CoreWeave (CRWV).

More: SpaceX's major AI compute deal with Anthropic could end a lot sooner than expected.

While Anthropic has surpassed OpenAI's valuation, OpenAI may still beat Anthropic to the public markets. Recent reports suggest OpenAI plans to soon file confidentially for an initial public offering, which could lead the company to go public as soon as September. Anthropic is also expected to go public this year, but the timing is uncertain.
