Heartland's Latest Deal Positive But Execution Key -- Market Talk

Dow Jones
06/03

0045 GMT - Heartland's decision to combine its New Zealand bank with TSB Bank is positive, but comes with meaningful execution risks, says Forsyth Barr. The key to unlocking value from the merger is creating savings. Heartland believes it can reduce 12% of the combined operating expenses through eliminating duplicated overheads, notes analyst Ben Crozier. "We believe this is achievable but see the integration of technology systems and TSB's recent low lending and earnings growth as potential risks to a successful merger," says Forsyth Barr, which rates Heartland at neutral. It expects the deal to proceed, so incorporates it into its forecasts. Forsyth Barr's price target rises 12% to NZ$1.40/share. Heartland is down 1.2% at NZ$1.255 today.
