Stantec's joint venture with Black & Veatch has been awarded an $85 million contract by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to design new systems aimed at stopping invasive carp from reaching the Great Lakes.
The Black & Veatch-Stantec JV secured a single award task order contract to provide design and engineering support services for the Brandon Road Interbasin Project, a critical Great Lakes ecosystem protection effort.
Invasive carp, originally imported from Asia, pose a major threat to the Great Lakes because they outcompete native fish for food and can destabilize entire ecosystems. If established in large numbers, they could trigger long-term ecological harm across the region.
The Brandon Road Lock and Dam has been identified as the crucial chokepoint for deploying layered deterrent systems to keep the carp from reaching the Great Lakes.
The $85 million, eight-year contract will help redesign the Brandon Road Lock and dam, a central component to the Corps' strategy to block the invasive species from moving between the Mississippi River and the Great Lakes.
