President Donald Trump has threatened a federal government takeover of Washington, DC, if progressive candidate Janeese Lewis George wins the city's Democratic mayoral primary, multiple outlets reported Thursday.

"Maybe we take back Washington, run it on the federal basis," Trump told reporters at the White House Thursday, the report said, adding "We won't put up with it."

Any federal takeover would require an act of Congress under the DC Home Rule Act of 1973, Bloomberg noted.
