Dow Restarts 600,000 MT/Year LCH3 Ethylene Cracker at Terneuzen -- OPIS

Multinational chemical producer Dow has restarted its 600,000 metric tons/year LCH3 ethylene cracker at Terneuzen in the Netherlands, a spokesperson told OPIS on Friday.

Dow chose to idle the unit in June 2025 following the postponement of a planned maintenance turnaround due to weak market conditions. However, the unit is now being prepared for a restart, as conditions support the return to operations, the company spokesperson said.

The No. 3 cracker is the newest of the three crackers on the site, two of which can run on liquefied petroleum gas $(LPG)$ or naphtha as a feedstock, although naphtha is the baseline chosen fuel. The unit also has a propylene capacity of 300,000 mt/year.

Naphtha imports at Terneuzen have fallen significantly since the idling of the third unit, data from shipping analytics provider Vortexa showed.

In the third quarter last year, naphtha imports totaled 270,000 mt, down from 330,000 mt in April-June 2025. Imports dropped as low as 187,000 mt in Q4 last year before edging up to 194,000 mt in Q1 2026.
