Casey's General Stores Says Consumers Are Holding Up -- Market Talk

1259 ET - Casey's General Stores says consumer spending habits appear largely unfazed by higher gas prices from the last few months. "I think consumers are hanging in there," Chief Executive Darren Rebelez says during a call with analysts. "They're probably being a little more discerning about where they shop and how they spend their money, but we're seeing growth across all of the income cohorts." Casey's is seeing the slowest spending growth among consumers with incomes below $50,000 a year, while those who make more continue to spend at the same clip, he says. Spending behaviors inside Casey's stores appear largely the same, while at the pump, some consumers are trading down from premium gas, or buying fewer gallons per transaction, he says. "But it's very minor," he says. "This is kind of very nuanced behaviors." (kelly.cloonan@wsj.com)
