Shares of J.M. Smucker rose Tuesday after the packaged-food maker reported better-than-expected quarterly earnings, though it expects sales to fall in the coming year.

The company posted adjusted earnings of $2.77 a share in its fiscal fourth quarter, up from $2.31 last year and above analysts' consensus estimates of $2.64, according to FactSet. Net sales rose 6% on an organic basis to $2.27 billion, surpassing Wall Street's call for $2.17 billion.

J.M. Smucker stock jumped 4.2%. Shares had gained 4.1% this year as of Monday's close of trading.

The reaction may have been even better if not for some mixed guidance for fiscal 2027. The company expects net sales to decline 3% to 4% year over year, while analysts had anticipated sales would rise slightly. It forecast adjusted earnings per share of $9.75 to $10.25. Wall Street was looking for $9.81 a share.

Still, the earnings beat is a decent start for J.M. Smucker in its new era since striking a deal with activist investor Elliott Investment Management in February. As part of the deal, J.M. Smucker appointed two new board members and signed an information-sharing agreement to facilitate collaboration with the firm.
