Sigma Lithium (SGML) said Tuesday that a judge in the Court of Justice of Minas Gerais overturned a lower-court ruling that could have required the company to set aside up to $10 million while the legal case proceeds.
The company said the appeals court ordered it to pay for an independent review of how its operations affect nearby communities in Aracuai and Itinga.
Sigma said the review would provide an objective assessment of its environmental performance.
The ruling removes the immediate risk of the proposed $10 million requirement while allowing independent oversight of its environmental impact to continue.
