Former Andreessen Horowitz partner John O'Farrell has criticized venture capital firms and AI industry backers for opposing artificial intelligence regulation, calling the effort a "huge mistake" in an opinion piece published in The New York Times, CNBC reported Thursday.

O'Farrell took aim at political action committee Leading the Future, whose backers include Andreessen Horowitz, OpenAI co-founder Greg Brockman, Palantir co-founder Joe Lonsdale, SV Angel founder Ron Conway and Perplexity.

He said the group's more than $125 million fundraising effort was aimed at discouraging politicians from pursuing aggressive AI oversight, according to CNBC.

O'Farrell argued AI is unlike previous technologies and said industry leaders should help policymakers understand both its benefits and risks.
