Vail Resorts Just Had Its Worst Winter in 40 Years -- Market Talk

Dow Jones

1740 ET - Historically adverse weather conditions across the western U.S. weighed on Vail Resorts' operations during the recent quarter, driving meaningful pressure on both visitation and revenue, CEO Rob Katz says on a call with analysts. The trends were most notable at the company's resorts in the Rockies, which experienced the worst season on record for snowfall. "To give context on the magnitude of the impact of conditions on visitation this past season, industry-wide visitation in the Rockies declined approximately 24%," Katz says. "When you look back over 40 years, the prior worst decline in visitation outside of Covid-related closures for the Rockies was down 8% in 2012, which illustrates the unprecedented severity of the conditions and the anomaly we just experienced." Shares are off 5% in late trading after Vail once again cuts in outlook for the year. (connor.hart@wsj.com)
