Casey's General Stores 4Q Profit, Revenue Rise, Helped by Pizza Sales

Casey's General Stores logged higher profit and revenue in its latest quarter, with the convenience store chain pointing to particularly strong pizza sales.

The Ankeny, Iowa company on Tuesday posted a fiscal fourth-quarter profit of $162.7 million, or $4.37 a share, up from $98.3 million, or $2.63 a share, a year earlier. Analysts polled by FactSet forecast $3.31 a share.

Revenue rose to $4.57 billion from $3.99 billion, compared with analyst estimates of $4.33 billion.

Inside same-store sales rose 5.5% in the fourth quarter. Casey's pointed to strong sales of whole pizzas as well as appetizers and sides, in addition to strength in non-alcoholic beverages.

Same-store fuel gallons rose 1.5% in the quarter.

For the fiscal year, which ends next April, the company expects earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization to increase 8% to 10%. It projects inside same-store sales will increase 2% to 5%.

Casey's expects to open at least 120 stores this fiscal year through a mix of mergers and acquisitions and new store construction.

Casey's expects to open at least 120 stores this fiscal year through a mix of mergers and acquisitions and new store construction.

The company increased its existing share repurchase program, to a total amount of $1 billion, and raised its quarterly dividend by 14%, to 65 cents a share.

The new payout, equal to $2.60 a year, represents an annual yield of about 0.3% based on Tuesday's closing price of $761.18. The dividend is payable Aug. 14 to stockholders of record Aug. 1, the company said.
