Summer Movie Season at the Multiplex Is Shaping Up Nicely -- Market Talk

Dow Jones

0947 ET - The summer movie season is shaping up very nicely, Wedbush analysts say in a research note, citing May box-office results that were up 10% from last year and the highest since 2019. "The box office recovery is broad, deep, and demographically durable," they write. Theater owners such as Cinemark and Marcus are well positioned to capitalize on growing demand, as is IMAX, whose premium movie-going experience has reached critical mass. Theatrical windows are lengthening, with movie studios including Universal, Sony, Paramount and Disney all reaping the economic rewards of keeping films on the big screen longer. Even Netflix is getting in on it, pursing a full theatrical run for director Greta Gerwig's upcoming Narnia movie. (connor.hart@wsj.com)
