Four months into his job, Kroger CEO Greg Foran says he's been to more than 100 stores, and only two of five were in very good condition.
"The gap between our best stores and the rest of the fleet needs to improve," Foran, a former Walmart exec, said on Kroger's earnings call today. "Closing it is one of our biggest near-term opportunities."
Foran says lower prices are needed to better compete with rivals like Walmart and attract cash-strapped consumers. He also said Kroger isn't opening up enough new stores: "Standing still in store growth means standing still in market share."
