A key piece of equipment used by Alpha Metallurgical Resources to transfer coal was damaged by high winds in Virginia and is currently inoperable.

A stacker reclaimer machine at Dominion Terminal Associates, which is majority owned by Alpha, "sustained significant damage" from a Sunday evening storm in Virginia that led to winds of more than 80 miles an hour, the mining company said Thursday.

The machine is one of two used to transfer coal in and out of stockpiles at the terminal in Newport News, Va. The other machine remains intact and operational, the company said.

Alpha said it sent force majeure letters to customers affected by the damage, adding that DTA officials are evaluating the scope of the damage and working on a plan of action.

Alpha uses the terminal for most shipments but has capacity at nearby terminals, it said.
