Pfizer said the latest trial of one of its lung cancer treatments missed its primary endpoint.

The drugmaker reported Wednesday that the Phase 3 study of sigvotatug vedotin, which is being developed to treat locally advanced, unresectable or metastatic non-squamous non-small cell lung cancer, failed to show statistically significant improvement in overall survival compared with the widely used chemotherapy drug docetaxel.

"Patients with previously treated advanced NSCLC are a historically difficult-to-treat population, and there is clearly more work to be done to improve the outcomes for this population," Pfizer Chief Oncology Officer Jeff Legos said.

Patients who had only received one previous line of therapy, which made up about two-thirds of the enrollment, did achieve strong efficacy outcomes from sigvotatug vedotin compared with an established standard of care, Legos said. And the drug had a manageable safety profile.

Pfizer is still running a separate trail testing sigvotatug vedotin, in combination with the drug pembrolizumab, as a first-line treatment for patients who haven't received prior therapies yet.
