BOC's Macklem Expects US-Canada Trade Talks to Carry On -- Market Talk

1217 ET - Bank of Canada Gov. Tiff Macklem says one of the key assumptions underpinning the central bank's latest forecast is unlikely to change for the foreseeable future. Macklem tells reporters at a press conference in Paris that both Washington and Ottawa are signaling no agreement to renew the existing U.S.-Mexico-Canada trade pact,by a July 1 deadline. Trade talks between the U.S. and Canada have moved a relatively slow pace, compared with U.S. progress with Mexico. Discussions between the U.S. and Canada, Macklem reckons, "will be ongoing. I don't know how long, -- weeks, months, we'll see." Macklem says BOC is monitoring trade talks, and depending on developments and implications for Canada, "we will respond accordingly."
