Market Chatter: UK Weighs Requiring Social Media Platforms to Prioritize Trusted News Sources

Britain is considering rules that would require social media platforms, including Meta's (META) Facebook, Alphabet's (GOOGL) YouTube, and TikTok, to make content from trusted news providers more visible in users' feeds and search results, Reuters reported Sunday.

The government said increasing the visibility of regulated news organizations such as the BBC, ITV, and Channel 4 could help combat online misinformation, according to Reuters.

The report said officials are also considering extending public service media status to online-only providers and updating broadcasting rules to reflect changing viewing habits.

Meta and Alphabet did not immediately respond to MT Newswires' requests for comment.
