MDA Space has been tapped to build Canada's next radar satellite, a new addition to the country's satellite constellation mission that will extend national Earth-observation capabilities.

The Canadian space technology company said Wednesday that it was awarded a contract by the Canadian Space Agency to supply an advanced, synthetic aperture radar satellite that will operate with the Radarsat constellation mission.

The deal covers the satellite's design, build, launch and ground-system upgrades, and marks the next phase of Ottawa's multi-billion-dollar plan to maintain and expand its sovereign Earth-observation capabilities. The spacecraft will be built on MDA's Chorus platform, the company's fourth-generation Earth-observation system that is now in final integration and expected to launch later this year.

The satellite is being funded under Radarsat+, a 1.01 billion Canadian dollar ($710.7 million) federal program announced in 2023 to ensure long-term continuity of Canada's radar-imaging capabilities.

MDA said the contract follows an initial C$44.7 million contract issued in December to procure and deliver long lead parts.
