Alphabet's (GOOG, GOOGL) YouTube, Meta's (META) Facebook, and Snap's (SNAP) Snapchat face tighter enforcement after Australia introduced a bill to strengthen its under-16 social media ban, multiple outlets reported Monday, citing parliamentary actions and statements by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.

The legislation grants the eSafety Commissioner more information-gathering powers to target tech firms over non-compliance, the news outlets quoted Albanese as saying on Saturday.

The maximum financial penalties for platforms failing to block underage users will double to 99 million Australian dollars ($68.2 million) from a previously set AU$49.5 million, the reports said.

Alphabet, Meta, and Snapchat did not immediately respond to MT Newswires' request for comment.
