South Bow's (SOBO) subsidiaries South Bow (USA) and South Bow Infrastructure Operations have agreed to pay more than $26 million to settle allegations that the 2022 Keystone Pipeline rupture in Kansas violated the Clean Water Act, the Environmental Protection Agency, the Department of Justice and the State of Kansas said Friday.

The settlement resolves allegations against South Bow (USA), which owns the Keystone Pipeline, and South Bow Infrastructure Operations, which operates it. The Dec. 7, 2022, rupture released nearly 13,000 barrels, or about 543,000 gallons, of crude oil into Mill Creek, contaminating the area and killing or affecting more than 2,700 animals.

Under the settlement, the company will also undertake about $40 million of work designed to prevent future spills and contribute more than $3 million to Kansas for natural resource restoration projects, according to the statement.

South Bow didn't immediately respond to a request for comment from MT Newswires.
