Fanduel Reportedly Had Bryce Harper Send Personal Video to Gambling-addicted Customer

Flutter Entertainment's FanDuel had Philadelphia Phillies star Bryce Harper send a personalized video message to a big-betting customer in 2024 after that customer had incurred steep losses, according to a report from the The Philadelphia Inquirer. That customer is now a plaintiff in a lawsuit against FanDuel, along with rival DraftKings, alleging that sportsbook companies are using their products to maximize their customers' gambling addictions. Harper doesn't explicitly encourage the customer to keep betting, and there is no evidence that Harper has a partnership with FanDuel or knew about the plaintiff's gambling addiction, per the report. But his unusual participation in the video is being scrutinized given the ethos in professional sports about athletes maintaining distance between bettors, the report says. (dean.seal@wsj.com)
