United Microelectronics (UMC) has begun producing silicon photonics chips in Singapore to meet growing demand for high-speed artificial intelligence connectivity, Nikkei Asia reported Tuesday, citing Senior Vice President G.C. Hung.

Hung told Nikkei that silicon photonics and co-packaged optics will drive growth over the next few years, with United Microelectronics shifting production to 12-inch wafers to improve performance and power efficiency.

Silith Technology will be the first major customer for United Microelectronics' new photonic chip production, while IMEC is helping develop a broader manufacturing platform targeted for launch in 2027, Nikkei Asia added.

United Microelectronics did not immediately respond to MT Newswires' request for comment.
