Intel, Johnson & Johnson, ASML, and More Stocks That Explain Today's Market

Stocks looked set to build on their recent gains Wednesday, as investors assessed another batch of quarterly earnings reports.

ASML rose 3.7% after the Dutch chip-equipment maker raised its annual sales guidance again and said it would produce more of its machines as the artificial-intelligence boom boosts demand.

Johnson & Johnson slipped 1.2%, even after the drugmaker raised its full-year outlook based strength in its oncology business. Investors may have been fretting about weaker sales of Crohn's disease treatment Stelara, which had been a major moneymaker for the company.

BlackRock added 4.4% after the asset manager's second-quarter earnings and assets under management beat analysts' expectations.

Morgan Stanley is also set to report its second-quarter results ahead of the opening bell, while J.B. Hunt Transport Services and United Airlines are due to post their numbers after the close.

These stocks were also making moves in premarket trading:

IBM edged up 0.8%, having tanked 25% on Tuesday following dismal preliminary results. IT and software stocks Accenture, Adobe, ServiceNow, and Workday were also rising.

Intel climbed 3.2% and Marvell added 0.7% as investors piled into chip stocks, although Micron slipped 1.5%.

PayPal jumped 21% after a report said Stripe and Advent International had teamed up on a bid valuing the payments company at more than $53 billion. Advent declined to comment, and PayPal and Stripe didn't immediately respond to requests for comment from Barron's.
