Clariant Rejects New Claim it Infringed EU Competition Law on Ethylene Purchasing Market

Swiss chemical company Clariant rejected new claims that its purchases of ethylene broke European Union competition law.

Clariant said late last week that it was one of four companies that received a claim for damages in a lawsuit filed by U.S.-listed chemicals company Dow.

Dow's European business is seeking 1.1 billion euros ($1.26 billion) in damages in relation to infringement of EU competition law on the ethylene purchasing market, Clariant said.

Clariant is facing multiple lawsuits that allege its purchases infringed competition law. In October last year, energy companies BP and ExxonMobil filed lawsuits, while U.S-listed chemical company LyondellBasell was seeking a total of around 1.6 billion euros in damages, Clariant said last year.

Clariant said it rejected the new allegation and would defend its actions in legal proceedings.

Dow didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.
