Kinder Morgan 2Q Profit, Revenue up on Rising Natural Gas Demand

Kinder Morgan posted higher profit and revenue in its second quarter as rising demand for natural gas continues to boost its business.

The Houston-based energy infrastructure company on Wednesday reported a profit of $867 million, or 39 cents a share, compared with $715 million, or 32 cents a share, in the same quarter a year ago.

Adjusted earnings were 37 cents a share, ahead of the 32 cents a share expected by analysts polled by FactSet.

Revenue rose to $4.48 billion from $4.04 billion. Analysts were looking for $4.22 billion.

Executive Chairman Richard Kinder cited ongoing demand for natural gas, noting that increasing liquefied natural gas exports, rising power demand and industrial expansion is boosting utilization among its assets, which includes pipelines and storage terminals.

Chief Executive Kim Dang said that the company's project backlog at the end of the quarter stood at $9.6 billion, down $500 million compared to the end of the first quarter, as several large projects were brought into service. The board has contingently approved almost $400 million in projects not yet included in the backlog.

For the full year, Kinder Morgan expects its adjusted earnings per share to come in 12% ahead of its forecast of $1.36.
