Crown Holdings posted higher sales in its second quarter, as global beverage can volumes increased.

The maker of aluminum cans and aerosol containers posted net income of $245 million, or $2.23 a share, compared with $181 million, or $1.56 a share, a year earlier.

Adjusted earnings were $2.49 a share. Analysts polled by FactSet were expecting $2.16 a share.

Revenue rose to $3.67 billion. Analysts polled by FactSet were expecting $3.37 billion.

The company said global beverage can volumes increased 5%. There was double-digit growth in Asia and increases of 7% and 5% in Europe and North America, respectively, which offset softer demand in Latin America.

The company said the transit business also performed well despite a tepid global industrial production environment.

Chief Executive Timothy Donahue said that global beverage can demand will continue to rise as consumers prefer aluminum cans as the most sustainable beverage packaging option.

Crown forecast adjusted earnings per share between $2.20 and $2.30 for its fiscal third quarter. Wall Street is expecting $2.27 a share, according to FactSet.

For the full year, Crown raised adjusted earnings per share to between $8.30 and $8.50 from $7.90 and $8.30. Wall Street is looking for $8.12 a share, according to FactSet.
