TSMC is Set to Ratchet AI Costs Even Higher. What it Means for Intel.

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing intends to raise its prices by up to 10% from 2027, Nikkei Asia reported Tuesday, citing unnamed sources.

The Taiwanese chip maker's actions ripple throughout the technology sector. It is the main supplier of chips to Nvidia, the leading designer of semiconductors for artificial-intelligence applications. It also makes the core processors inside Apple iPhones and processors for Advanced Micro Devices and Broadcom.

AI infrastructure is set to cost Big Tech firms $650 billion this year, a sum that will only grow as suppliers like TSMC raise prices. J.P. Morgan expects AI capital expenditure to rise to more than $1 trillion in 2027.

TSMC didn't immediately respond to Barron's request for comment.

The company's American depositary receipts were up 4.3% on Tuesday.

TSMC's move may not come as much of a surprise. J.P. Morgan analyst Gokul Hariharan wrote in a research note last week that he expected TSMC to hike prices by 8%-10% in 2027 for more advanced chips, citing the need to maintain its margins amid its U.S. expansion and other overseas expenses.

Although Intel is positioning itself as a viable alternative to TMSC, it might not benefit much from the price increases. TMSC is set to remain the dominant manufacturer of leading-edge chips according to Hariharan, as it implements its current-generation A16 and next-generation A14 manufacturing technology,.

"We believe that TSMC should retain 95+% share in the first two waves of N2/A16 demand, and current progress in A14 (likely revenues in 2029) should keep it well ahead of Intel and [ Samsung Electronics'] Samsung Foundry," Hariharan wrote.
