Market Chatter: China Mulls Tighter AI, Chip Export Controls to Curb Technology Transfers

Chinese regulators are weighing tighter export controls on artificial-intelligence and semiconductor technologies to curb overseas transfers, the Financial Times reported Tuesday, citing people involved in the discussions.

China's Ministry of Commerce has consulted AI firms such as Alibaba (BABA) on restricting exports of training data and downloads of model weights, sources told the FT.

Regulators are also considering limits that would block overseas foundries from producing advanced chips based on designs from Chinese companies, according to the report.

Alibaba did not immediately respond to MT Newswires' request for comment. Efforts to reach China's Ministry of Commerce were unsuccessful.
