Shares of IMAX jumped after the company said the opening weekend for Christopher Nolan's "The Odyssey" broke a box office record for a film shot entirely with the company's cameras.

The stock was up 6.5% at $41.85 in premarket trading. Shares had gained 6.3% year-to-date when the market closed Wednesday.

IMAX said before the opening bell that Nolan's epic delivered 20% of the global box office during its opening weekend and pulled in an all-time high of $52 million globally from IMAX screens alone.

Based on ticket reservations, the film is on track for a historic IMAX run, the company said.

It just hit its highest-grossing Monday and Tuesday ever and has about $60 million in presales for future showings.

The company also posted second-quarter earnings of $15.4 million, or 27 cents a share, compared with $11.3 million, or 20 cents a share, in the same quarter a year earlier.

Stripping out one-time items, adjusted earnings were 43 cents a share. Analysts polled by FactSet had been expecting 28 cents a share.

Quarterly revenue climbed 12% to $102.8 million, beating forecasts for $94.7 million.
