Celldex to End Phase 2 Study for Skin-disease Treatment

Celldex will discontinue a phase 2 study of a skin-disease treatment after it failed to meet its primary or key secondary endpoints.

The treatment, a subcutaneous delivery of barzolvolimab to treat the skin disease prurigo nodularis, did not result in an improvement in itch or skin lesions compared to a placebo, Celldex said Tuesday.

Shares fell 6%, to $33.52, in after-hours trading on Tuesday.

"It is disappointing that this study did not confirm the promising signal we observed in the intravenous Phase 1b trial, and that the robust tryptase reductions seen in this study did not result in improvement of PN symptoms for patients who greatly need effective treatments," Chief Executive Officer Anthony Marucci said.

The company said it continues to evaluate barzolvolimab to treat three other conditions: chronic spontaneous urticaria, symptomatic dermographism and cold urticaria, Marucci said.
