Charter Revenue Declines Again as Subscriber Slide Continues

Charter Communications logged its fourth consecutive decline in quarterly revenue as its count of internet and video subscribers continues to drop.

The company posted a second-quarter profit of $1.29 billion, or $10.66 a share, compared with $1.3 billion, or $9.18 a share, in the year-earlier quarter with a larger base of shares outstanding. Analysts polled by FactSet had been expecting $9.98 a share.

Revenue pulled back by 1.8% to $13.53 billion, just ahead of analyst estimates for $13.51 billion.

During the quarter, internet subscribers fell by 172,000 to a total of 29.4 million, while video customers dropped by 21,000 to about 12.5 million.

Rising competition from fixed wireless and fiber connection services have been eating into the company's home-internet subscriber base while cord-cutting is weighing on its cable business.

Charter has meanwhile been building up its Spectrum Mobile business, which added 406,000 lines during the second quarter.
