Masahiro Kuniyuki, chief human resources officer (CHRO) of Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group Inc. $(MUFG)$, indicated the possibility of revising the company's hiring targets in a recent interview with The Yomiuri Shimbun. "Rather than chasing recruitment numbers in a mechanical way, we want to prioritize improving the quality of our talent," he said.

The following is excerpted from the interview.

The Yomiuri Shimbun: What is your most important priority as CHRO?

Masahiro Kuniyuki: In the financial sector, there is a growing number of areas that require advanced expertise, such as asset management, digital technology and cybersecurity. We have entered an era where it is not just the "quantity" of talent, but its "quality" that determines a company's competitiveness. The core of our talent strategy lies in the business and HR departments making decisions from a shared perspective on whether to develop talent internally or recruit from the outside.

Yomiuri: What is your recruitment strategy?

Kuniyuki: While the profile of the talent we need may change with advances in AI (artificial intelligence), we aim to establish a recruitment system that can adapt flexibly to environmental changes. Rather than chasing recruitment numbers in a mechanical way, we want to prioritize improving the quality of our talent while emphasizing expertise and aptitude.

Yomiuri: How do you address diversity, equity and inclusion $(DEI)$?

Kuniyuki: We aim to build an organization where every individual can thrive as their authentic self, regardless of gender, nationality, employment status, age or other qualities. Having people from diverse backgrounds allows us to identify challenges and needs we may not have noticed before, which in turn leads to the creation of new products and services.

Yomiuri: What do you prioritize for reskilling?

Kuniyuki: While the financial industry is becoming increasingly specialized, mastering a single field alone is sometimes insufficient. We believe that new value is created by taking on challenges in different fields and combining knowledge and experience.

The use of AI is also a key focus. We want to streamline operations and use the time saved to enhance the quality of our interactions with customers and our proposals. Our plan is to leverage AI to enhance the added value that only humans can provide.
