The Food and Drug Administration said 98 illnesses have been reported in a salmonella outbreak linked to eggs.

Laboratory, epidemiological, and traceback data from an investigation have determined that eggs recalled by Midwest Poultry Services are a likely source of illnesses, the FDA said. The FDA, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and state and local officials are investigating.

Based on epidemiological information collected by the CDC, the illnesses include 26 hospitalizations.

On Wednesday, Midwest Poultry Services voluntarily recalled about 1.59 million dozens of eggs sold at Kroger and other stores due to the risk of salmonella. The egg producer said it wasn't aware of any specific illnesses linked to its products.

The company said it identified the issue on its two Texas farms through proactive environmental-monitoring practices and root-cause analysis.

The eggs were shipped to food-service and retail customers in Texas, Oklahoma and Louisiana.

The FDA said 40 of 44 ill people with information available reported eating eggs. Midwest Poultry Services was identified as a common egg source but doesn't account for all the illnesses, the FDA said.
