Rigetti Computing said it is expanding its collaboration with Hewlett Packard Enterprise to build a new hybrid quantum-classical supercomputer.

The companies, along with the Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center, are working together to develop the TangleLab supercomputing testbed, they said on Monday.

The project will feature a super computer powered by a 9-qubit Novera quantum computing system integrated with a classical high-performance computing system.

The project will be funded by a $5 million grant from the National Science Foundation.

Construction is expected to begin on Sept. 1, and the site should be fully operational by next year, Rigetti said.

Rigetti and HPE have already been collaborating to commercialize quantum-enabled high-performance computing systems.

"We are in a strong position to deliver world-leading hybrid computing solutions -- starting with TangleLab," Rigetti Chief Executive Subodh Kulkarni said.
