Two New Jersey men and a Washington-state man accused of plotting to support Islamic State have pleaded guilty to terrorism-related offenses.

Milo Sedarat, 21 years old, and Tomas-Kaan Jimenez-Guzel, 19, friends from affluent Montclair, N.J., were arrested last year after federal investigators unearthed an encrypted chat between individuals who talked about supporting Islamic State and going overseas to fight with the terrorist organization, law-enforcement officials said. The chat came to light as federal officials tracked three men in Michigan who were accused of planning a terrorist attack on gay bars on Halloween weekend, authorities said.

According to court documents, Jimenez-Guzel was arrested at Newark Liberty International Airport on his way to board a flight to Turkey. He allegedly planned to go from Turkey to Syria to fight alongside Islamic State members and accelerated his schedule after arrests in Michigan.

Sedarat pleaded guilty to concealing material support by hiding a $500 cash payment he gave Jimenez-Guzel to help pay for flights of Saed Ali Mirreh, 20, of Kent, Wash., who also pleaded guilty to conspiring to provide material support to Islamic State.

Sedarat is the son of Roger Sedarat, an Iranian-American poet and professor at Queens College in New York City, according to public records and information shared online by the family.

"These men actively plotted and planned to go overseas to fight with ISIS, one of the worst terrorist organizations responsible for unspeakable violence all over the world," said Stefanie Roddy, special agent in charge of the Federal Bureau of Investigation Newark office.

Jimenez-Guzel and Mirreh, who both pleaded guilty to providing material support to a designated foreign terrorist organization, each face up to 20 years' imprisonment. Sedarat faces up to 10 years' imprisonment having pleaded guilty to concealing material support. They are scheduled to sentenced later this year.
