Acting ICE Director Divests GEO Group Stock, Recuses From Detention Contracts

Acting ICE Director David Venturella said in a June 30 letter that he had divested all of his GEO Group (GEO) stock before joining US Immigration and Customs Enforcement and had recused himself from participating in particular matters involving the private prison company, according to a follow-up letter from Senator Elizabeth Warren.

Venturella also said he had complied with all ethics requirements, disclosed his prior employment with GEO Group before joining ICE and complied with ethics guidance regarding his former employment.

In a follow-up letter sent Sunday, Warren called Venturella's recusals "insufficient," saying they leave "key loopholes" that could allow him to use his role at ICE to benefit GEO Group financially.

Warren also said Venturella continues to receive payments through a GEO Group retirement plan and asked him to disclose when he divested his GEO stock, how much he previously held and whether he owns shares in other private detention companies, including CoreCivic.
