Wildfires Destroy Hundreds of Homes in Washington State

Wildfires ripped through the Spokane area of eastern Washington state, destroying hundreds of homes and forcing thousands of people to evacuate.

Three blazes, which started Saturday, burned through 7,500 acres in what Spokane Mayor Lisa Brown called "the worst natural disaster our region has faced."

More than 900 firefighters were working to contain the fires in Spokane County. The causes of the fires are still under investigation. No deaths or injuries have been reported, but given the size of the fires, authorities said that could change. Roughly 230,000 people live in the county.

Washington Gov. Bob Ferguson, a Democrat, said he spoke to President Trump on Sunday and that the president "expressed his support for what the people are going through out here."

Dry weather and wind gusts in the state have made it easy for fires to spread. There are 15 major ongoing wildfires in Washington, scorching some 250,000 acres, said Dave Upthegrove, the state's public lands commissioner. "It's not a normal season," he said.

Benjamin Cossel, a spokesman for the U.S. Forest Service, said 600 structures were destroyed by the Spokane area fires.

More than 9,200 customers in Spokane County were without power Sunday. Energy company Avista Utilities said that it cut power to some customers Saturday because of elevated wildfire risk and that it would restore power when conditions were safe.
