The companies extended their collaboration in 2024 to cover the aluminium value chain, including potential scrap collection.\nMercedes-Benz said aluminium plays a “central role” in its materials strategy, with the lightweight metal increasingly used in electric vehicles. As part of its Ambition 2039 strategy, the carmaker aims to use aluminium with a carbon footprint 90% below the European average in its vehicles by 2030.\nMercedes-Benz deepens recycled aluminium push\n“The automotive industry needs materials that can cut emissions without compromising quality, safety or performance,” Eivind Kallevik, chief executive of Hydro, said.\n“This partnership shows how Hydro, as a leading supplier of recycled and low-carbon aluminium, can deliver industrial-scale solutions that support both decarbonization and competitiveness,” he added.\nHydro CIRCAL is recycled aluminium made with at least 75% post-consumer scrap, recovered from end-of-life products including windows, facades, vehicles and consumer electronics. The post-consumer scrap content is tracked and documented for each production batch in a process verified by classification organization DNV.\nHydro began supplying CO2-reduced aluminium to the foundry at Mercedes-Benz Germany’s Untertürkheim plant, Mettingen section, in 2023, using material with at least 25% post-consumer scrap content. The material has been used in structural components for body-in-white applications.\nMercedes-Benz said last year that Hydro’s recycled aluminium products would be used in safety and crash-relevant components, including shock towers for the EQS, EQE, S-Class, GLC and C-Class models. The company said the material would also be used in the support frame for the electric powertrain of the upcoming Mercedes Modular Architecture platform.\n“Producing aluminium using only secondary material requires around 5% of the energy needed for primary aluminium production,” Mercedes-Benz said.\nIn addition to increasing recycled aluminium intake, the companies are working to curb emissions from primary aluminium production by using renewable energy while also exploring closed-loop recycling.\n“The next generation of automotive supply chains will be characterized by transparency, a circular economy and strong regional value chains,” Yanni von Roy-Jiang, head of procurement and supplier management at Mercedes-Benz AG, said on Monday.\nHydro highlights growing demand for low-carbon aluminium\nAccording to Hydro, recycling is the quickest route to near-zero-emission aluminium. The company says its CIRCAL range offers aluminium with a carbon footprint up to 97% lower than the global average for primary aluminium.\nIts CIRCAL 75R product has a carbon footprint of 1.9kg CO2 equivalent per kg of aluminium produced, 88% lower than the global average for primary aluminium. Availability is limited, although Hydro said its annual capacity can accommodate industrial and larger-scale applications.\nCIRCAL 100R is made from 100% recycled post-consumer scrap and has a carbon footprint below 0.5kg CO2 equivalent per kg of aluminium. Because of the complicated and time-consuming production process, the product is currently available only in small, on-demand batches, Fastmarkets understands.\nLast year, Hydro sold 58,000 tonnes of its CIRCAL products and 470,000 tonnes of its REDUXA line, which is primary aluminium produced using renewable energy. A spokesperson said income from these products increased over 50% year on year, “demonstrating the growing market appetite for sustainable materials.”\nEU policy could support demand for recycled aluminium\nRecycling aluminium scrap requires the removal of unwanted elements such as paint, lacquer coating, oil, plastics, iron, minerals and organic compounds. The process is technically complex and depends on factors including scrap origin, original chemistry, previous use and physical properties, which can hinder wider adoption.\nYet the partnership comes as policymakers and environmental groups push for higher recycled and lower-carbon material content in vehicles. This will strengthen demand for verified post-consumer aluminium scrap, according to some market participants.\nPer campaign group Transport & Environment’s (T&E) estimates, aluminium makes up around 20% of embedded emissions in electric vehicles, while the automotive sector accounts for more than one-third of the market for European aluminium production.\nTransport & Environment calls for green aluminium targets\nIn a research paper published last year, T&E argued that “green aluminium” could be cost-competitive by 2040, adding only €25 ($28.45) to the price of a new car.\nT&E said green aluminium could be delivered by combining recycled and primary aluminium, with the carbon threshold decreasing over time. The group has called for the EU to introduce a minimum 60% green aluminium content requirement in new cars from 2035, increasing to 85% in 2040 and 95% in 2045.\nAdditionally, T&E said only post-consumer scrap should qualify for recycled, local-content targets under the End-of-Life Vehicles Regulation (ELVR), which was formally adopted last month.\nAt present, the ELVR only includes targets for recycled plastic content, but it paves the way for the European Commission to introduce targets for other materials, such as aluminium and steel, in the future. The regulation also expands carmakers’ scrap management responsibility, requiring manufacturers to cover the cost of collecting and treating end-of-life vehicles in the EU.\nHydro said it supports policies that accelerate decarbonization and circularity, while ensuring that European industry remains competitive. “The most effective regulatory frameworks are those that create demand for lower-emission materials, provide transparency and traceability, and recognize the contribution of circular materials across value chains,” a spokesperson said.\nLow-carbon aluminium moves toward the mass market\nA Mercedes-Benz spokesperson told Fastmarkets that Hydro CIRCAL will be used in the European and US markets, but specific details, including commercial terms and the content of recycled and primary aluminium in the electric vehicles, could not be disclosed.
