Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) said it is investigating a breakdown of coordination involving Qantas Airways' (ASX:QAN) QantasLink Bombardier DHC-8 and a Qantas Boeing 737 at Sydney Airport on July 27, according to a Wednesday statement by the regulator.

The ATSB said air traffic control had cleared a Qantas Boeing 737 to cross a runway while a QantasLink Bombardier DHC-8 was landing on the same runway, with controllers detecting the conflict and alerting both crews in time for the 737 to stop before the crossing point.

The investigation will involve interviewing those involved, reviewing recorded data and gathering other relevant information, with a final report to be released when the investigation concludes, ATSB added.

"Both Qantas aircraft were cleared to proceed following instructions from Air Traffic Control, and we will support the ATSB in the investigation," said a Qantas spokesperson, in response to MT Newswires' request for comment.

Airservices Australia did not immediately respond to an MT Newswires email request for comment.

The airlines' shares rose 3% in recent Wednesday trade.
