Weak U.S. Jobs Data Puts Focus to Inflation Reports

0956 ET - The weakness in July payrolls makes the spotlight on next week's inflation data even more intense. The July CPI and PPI reports are slated for Wednesday and Thursday, respectively. "Overall, it's going to take a meaningful upside surprise in the price data next week for the Fed to hike interest rates as soon as September," says Capital Economics' Thomas Ryan. At Fitch Ratings, Olu Sonola, says the balance of risks remains tilted toward inflation, "giving the Fed little reason to worry about employment and every reason to keep its focus squarely on the inflation outlook." He says the September hike-or-hold decision "remains a 50/50 call." He adds that with two CPI reports and one PCE report still to come before the next Fed meeting, "the inflation data will likely tip the balance," he says.
