U.S. Road Travel in June Rose Nearly 1% from Year Ago as Fuel Prices Eased, DOT Says

U.S. road travel increased in June, as vehicle travel rebounded amid falling fuel prices, according to the latest Transportation Department data.

Travel on all roads during the month was estimated at 289.4 billion vehicle miles, according to DOT data. That's 0.9% or 2.6 billion miles higher than in June 2025.

The seasonally adjusted travel, which accounts for differences in the number of days per month, holidays and weekday composition, was up 0.5% from last June and 0.4% higher than in May -- which is one day longer than June and included five weekends compared to June's four. In terms of actual miles traveled, June's total was 3.6 billion miles fewer than the 293 billion traveled in May, the DOT data show.

Year to date, U.S. road travel has totaled 1.643 trillion miles, up about 13 billion miles from the same period in 2025. Over the 12 months ending in June, travel totaled 3.336 trillion miles, about 30 billion higher than during the same period a year earlier.

Travel during the month was higher than a year earlier in all regions of the country, with road travel rising 1.3% year over year in the North-East and South-Atlantic region, the DOT data show. Travel was up by 0.7% in the North-Central, South Gulf and Western regions.

The increases came as the price of U.S. regular unleaded gasoline averaged $3.967/gal during the month. While that was 48.6cts lower than the average price in May, it was also 79.5cts/gal higher than a year earlier and the highest average June price since 2022, OPIS pricing data show.

The monthly average was also the lowest in the past four months, OPIS data show.

The increase in road travel helped U.S. gasoline sales, which in June were up 1.6% from May.

Fuel sales throughout 2026, however, have struggled to keep up with last year, and volumes sold in June were 4.8% lower than the same month in 2025. That, however, was the lowest monthly year-over-year deficit since fuel prices shot higher in March in response to the fighting between the U.S. and Iran.
