The UK government said late Wednesday it is expanding the Global Talent visa to more than 100 of the country's companies, allowing them to sponsor top scientists and engineers to work in Britain for the first time, according to a government announcement.

The route was previously limited to universities, academic institutions, and research bodies.

Companies gaining access include AstraZeneca Plc (AZN) and Jaguar Land Rover, as well as smaller firms such as Added Value Solutions, Denroy Plastics, and Ffilm Cymru, the government said.

Eligible businesses span sectors including clean energy, life sciences, advanced manufacturing, digital technologies, and creative industries, the announcement said.

The government said it is also preparing to broaden the Future Technology Research and Innovation scheme, which allows eligible UK companies to host international researchers and specialists for work placements of up to two years.
